Crow by Tom Edwards

Crow

Elegantly perched, you caw your words,
You stand alone, the wisest of the birds,
Interwoven into myths and lore,
Your siblings rapping on the chamber door,
As omens, people cannot pierce your veil,
A guide to paradise or to Mort’s vale?
Ever watching, so much have you seen,
Remembering the faces who have been
Kind or generous, you show your grace,
But to the cruel you dive and claw the face
And eyes of both the living and the dead,
You’ll fight over the flesh or so it’s said,
Cries of murder when your brethren meet,
The sleepless watchmen, guardians of the street,
Your silhouette a welcome sight to see,
Holding parliament up in the tree,
On barren branches, gripped in Winter’s thrall,
Prophesisng life, its rise and fall,
Truly, you’re a beauty to behold,
I’ll wait for your embrace when tired and old.
